21 Days of Prayer & Fasting with an Eating Disorder or Disordered Eating

The kind of fasting I want is this: Remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free. Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives. Then my favor will shine on you like the morning sun, and your wounds will be quickly healed. I will always be with you to save you; my presence will protect you on every side. Isaiah 58:6-8

I’ve learned so much as I walk out and get free from ED (eating disorder) 21 days of fasting and prayer have always been one of my favorite times of the year but also a time that caused me great pain and confusion. Over the last few years though I’ve learned why.

Fasting can be very triggering for someone who suffers from an eating disorder or disordered eating.

This one word….Fasting….can cause my world to fall apart completely.

We study the life of Christ and his spiritual disciplines and we learn how important fasting and prayer are and how they can break the chains that bind us.

Prayer changes everything.

However, when one has an eating disorder/disordered eating fasting can destroy any and all progress you have made.

Restricting is NEVER GOOD under any circumstances.

Restricting TRIGGERS even done under the best of intentions.

Most people that do 21 days of prayer in January might do the Daniel Fast, food altogether, sugar, 1- 2 meals a day, etc. But in my brain, that simple suggestion to skip or restrict a meal can flip a switch that cannot be easily turned off and send me spiraling.

I can remember over the years when I started realizing I was struggling in this area I just didn’t know why or how or what to do to help myself. 21 days of prayer and fasting would roll around and I decide to do the Daniel fast and fail miserable. Enter more shame and guilt.

Then I’d decided to fast sugar, same thing, I’d fail miserably. Enter more shame and guilt. I’d ask myself time and time again “Why can’t I do this?”

I know people mean well but there are some that will shame you for not fasting what they’re fasting. That happened to me countless times. Let me just say I don’t need someone else heaping more shame and guilt on me I’ve done enough of that myself. You should NEVER shame anyone for doing something differently or not doing something you are doing because you have no idea what they are going through.

I read somewhere, “In many cases, asking a recovering eating disordered individual to fast for a single meal would be like inviting a recovering alcoholic to drink a beer: It is absolutely disastrous.” Let me just say it’s VERY TRUE!

I started with an eating disorder nutritionist In October 2019 before I knew it we were in a pandemic. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think something like that could happen in our country but here we were. It didn’t change much for me with my ED nutritionist because our appts were virtual. I started to flourish which is mind blowing because during a pandemic eating disorders as well as other addictions and disorders were skyrocketing. Not to say, I didn’t have my challenges but I praise God He was moving and working in me and through me to gain more freedom instead of losing freedom.

So as we start this season of 21 Days of Fasting and Prayer, FOOD IS NOT AN OPTION FOR ME and even though it’s taken me a really long time to believe this….It’s ok! If this has been your struggle too it’s ok for you too sweet friend.

I know we are called to Fast and Pray it’s all over the Bible. It was through 21 days of Fasting and Prayer when God finally said “Nicole, now is the time to deal with this secret problem you have.” He told me to throw out my diuretics and laxatives that I had been abusing for sooooo many years and I was set free right there! Haven’t touched another laxative or diuretic since. So I KNOW fasting and prayer work. It’s just mine and maybe yours needs to look differently and ITS OK.

We have to protect our own recovery. I have worked soooo incredibly hard to get to where I’m at and you best believe I’m protective of myself.

Fasting is simply laying aside SELF. Who couldn’t benefit from that, right?

Fasting is clearing out the clutter that we’ve let in and allowing God in those places. I’m sure there are many areas we can come up with to give up or Fast from that don’t involve food.

Fasting is about growing closer to God.

More of Him and less of me.

Fasting is NOT a diet and some people use it to lose weight at the beginning of the year but don’t work on the drawing closer to Him part.

There’s so many things you could Fast instead of food. It’s not about what your giving up it’s that you are dying to self so that Christ can be glorified through us.

Maybe, just maybe, me walking in my recovery, following my meal plan for someone with ED….maybe MY FAST. See now I’m learning self care and how to nourish myself….that’s a sacrifice and takes a lot of time and prayer.

So yes, I’m super excited about 21 Days of Fasting and Prayer! But I WILL NOT be fasting food in any way. My ED recovery is to precious to me and I’ve come to far for that. I look forward to seeing what our Mighty God will do during this season. It’s a the year of miracles. What are you believing God for? I’d love to pray for you.

Celebrities. Resolutions. Beauty. Weightloss. Diet Culture. Why we fall for all of it?

Hey y’all! I am curious about some things, maybe you can give me your thoughts. It might not be a popular post but I think it’s necessary one. At the beginning of this year as we all are bombarded by beauty and diet culture messages, lose weight, feel great. New year, new you, etc What are your thoughts about people pushing these messages? All these celebrities pushing their ideas, their plans, their products, it worked for me it will work for you…..right??? Let me start with saying I have been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, wore it proudly and loudly….100 of them prolly 🤣🙈 So I totally get it. No judgement at all. Just a conversation.

Let’s start with the famous Cindy Crawford. I’m not picking on her by any means but she pushes her Meaningful beauty line and says that’s why she looks so young. They say “she looks like she did in her twenties.” Then you say to yourself, why don’t I look like that? Wow!! Look at her! She. Looks. Fabulous! If it works for her maybe, just maybe it will work for me! So….if I buy her products I can look like her and have flawless skin too?” Friend, she owns 50% of Meaningful Beauty, she is making bank!! Millions! You don’t think that could be part of why she wants to “share her secret” with you????

Mmmm, I think so.

Maybe the products are good, I don’t know I’ve never tried them but when you say “THIS PRODUCT” is how I have kept my youthful look but you’ve also had Botox, plastic surgery, nips and tucks, etc. not to mention the best chefs, drs, and care money can buy. Which is it? The products or the Botox/surgery/peels, etc? Let’s be real, those also played a role in how her skin and body looks and why it’s so youthful. I’m all about some good skin care, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking care of yourself it’s the messages we receive and how we internalize those messages.

Those of us regular folks don’t have that kinda money to do all that “extra stuff” but we are sold a bill of goods, a lie, that this product will change your life. The ONLY thing that will change your life is JESUS. But we fall for it hook line and sinker. I would argue that you too can have flawless skin if you were a millionaire and did Botox, plastic surgery, and all the nips and tucks, and the bests doctors. Please hear me, I’m not knocking her or judging her in anyway at all, I’m sure she is a great person. The problem I have is pushing this product or other products like it and preying on women, vulnerable women saying you can look like me if you use my product too. But can you REALLY, if you use that product??? I’ll be the first to say I have bought into more skin care, weight loss, exercise equipment, creams and potions than I care to admit🙈 But when you say a product can do this to you too and you are also making money on it AND yes you may use it but you have done all these extra things to embellish your looks and making false claims. I’m just saying we should take note. Again, I’m quite certain that the average woman can’t go and fork out alllllll the money these celebrities fork out to look the way they do and then claim “use this product and you’ll be beautiful and happy like me” 🙄🙄 I use to fall for this stuff as well, not near as much today. But I have been know to google a breaking new cream that will help with skin tightening and smoothness, lol.

For so long I never felt good enough, pretty enough, smart enough, and the messages we get from the world can confirm that if we aren’t grounded in the One who created us. Friend, God says something different. He tells us we are His masterpiece. We were created in his image. We are chosen, holy, and set apart for His glory. Thats the truth! That’s what we should meditate on daily.

What about Dolly Parten? Yea, I’m going there lol. We didn’t watch the Dallas Cowboys halftime show but she was ALLLLLL the buzz, so of course I went to check it out. First, let me say I love Dolly, her singing, her personality, and her heart. But the comments about her were like “I wish I looked like that at her age.” “She works hard to look like that” Yes, she looked great there’s no denying but I guess my point is is that it’s not natural for a 77 year old to look like a 25 year old and it’s not aging gracefully like some said. She jokingly admits about how much surgery she’s had and how’s she’s spent so much money to keep herself looking “good.” For her to look like that she does allllll the things, Botox, enhancement surgeries, tucks, creams and potions, etc. Again, the average woman CANNOT afford that but we look at others who do and think less of ourselves and work harder to become “better.” Thats on us. We’ve gotta become so grounded in the love of Jesus to combat these lies. Renewing our mind is crucial. So often we look to images we can’t attain and then heap shame and guilt on ourselves when we fail to meet that standard. We tell ourselves we are not enough because today’s culture says so😐 we need to look like X or weigh a certain amount or you are less than. We shouldn’t be looking to the world or other people as our standard. You were made in the image of God. You are His image bearer. Hear me, I’m not judging any of these ladies I’m simply saying oftentimes we look to celebrities and other people to try and reach a certain standard that most often is not attainable or not attainable without a lot of money but that doesn’t make you less than or not enough. God has a plan and purpose for you and it has NOTHING to do with what you look like or what you weigh. You are no less usable by God if you don’t look like Cindy, Dolly, Page, or Oprah. Your color, shape, size, weight, doesn’t determine this either. Thats the TRUTH!! 💣💯

I don’t know if you watch Criminal Minds but Paget Brewster decided to stop dying her hair, this is what she tweeted:

I like my grey hair. I have felt pressure to dye it, pretend to be 35 again, no thanks. We all have huge issues to address, I know. This is one small battle. But I think all of us have sided personal battles. Let’s start by being kind to each other, even when we disagree. Please.

Comments were flying, talking about how much she had aged. Why? Because she doesn’t want to dye her hair anymore? How is that wrong? I personally loved her gray hair! But today’s culture likes to pick on people and call out “flaws” they see. I use that term loosely because I don’t see this as a flaws but others do. She is deciding to be mature and truly age gracefully. I think that’s beautiful.

Then we have Oprah, who has struggles with her weight for a good portion of her life. Up and down, up and down, up and down. I can relate to that all to well and maybe you can too. I think in part that makes her more human and relatable to us. Oprah has done a lot of great things but she is know well for her involvement with WeightWatchers and claims it as her saving grace. My words not hers. She is one of WeightWatchers biggest shareholders. She for sure is making bank!! Don’t kid yourself. Millions upon millions. Weight watchers recently came out and apologized “We got it wrong”: WeightWatchers CEO embraces “life saving” weight loss drugs. Some people need more help. Now they have added these weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic to their toolkit. They say “It’s not will power alone.” This scream’s prioritizing profits over health to me. What about you? They are in it for the money. Follow the money friend.

Oprah lost a bunch of weight recently from the shot not by using WeightWatchers but claims WW is the way. If that true then why take the shot? The problem with these quick weight loss things is they are not sustainable. You may lose the weight but will you maintain it? 80% of people will gain it right back and then some. 80%! Yes, 80% friend. This is why healing your relationship with food and your body are so important. That is what leads to lasting freedom.

I guess my point to all this is sweet one is your value and worth is in Christ. Not in diet culture. Not in what the world dems acceptable. Not is having flawless skin. Not having the perfect body. Perfect life, etc.

How misguided was I when I put all my hope in the things of the world only to be let down again and again. Maybe you find yourself there today, you are in good company. What I look like, how I dress, the car I drive, the house I live in, or the job I have…none of that matters or has eternal purpose. Having perfect skin, no cellulite, weighing a certain number has no bearing on how God can use you friend.

YOU ARE SO VALUABLE!

Just. The. Way. You. Are.

When your value does not come from Christ, then you will care far too much about how people see you. You will be afraid to be vulnerable. Your image of yourself will become clouded. Hear me when I say YOU are loved and you were to die for. Christ made that clear on the cross. When you truly understand that and are living in this powerful truth, there is nothing that someone can say that will cause you to forget that.

Having a relationship with MY JESUS is what matters. That is what’s life changing and as I walk this out and I feel like I can’t do it anymore or take anymore I cry out to Him one more time, and one more time, and one more time. He’s there waiting to pick me up, and sweet friend He’s there waiting for you. You have access to the King, lean into it. Call out to Him in your time of need.

You don’t need have to become someone new this year to have an amazing life. Be who God created you to be. Thats what other people need, not a clone of you.

Don’t shoot the messenger lol, I hope I was able to encourage you a little and show you to the One who can love and change you from the inside out. He loves you with an everlasting love. Ask him to help you be all he created you to be and then walk in it!

Happy New Year- Non-Diet Resolutions

Happy New Year’s y’all!!🎉🎊✨

Hope y’all had a great holiday. I know sometimes the holidays can be tough. Ours was great. We had our first grandchild in May, he’s just precious. Then our second grandchild in December. 2 grand babies WOW!! I am one happy Lolly for sure!

How was your 2023? It was a year of trusting God more, being more courageous, personal growth, setting boundaries and actually sticking to them. What have you learned from it?

As we head into a new year we have the opportunity to start fresh or we can get stuck and not move forward. Friend it’s a new season.

A blank page for you to write.

A fresh start!

See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19

What do you think of when I say New Years resolutions? Here are just a few. Number 1 and 2 are always neck and neck;

1. Exercise more

2. Lose weight

3. Get organized

4. Get a hobby

5. Save more money

5. Quit smoking/drink less

6. Spend more time with family

This is only to name a few.

Let me preface this by saying there is nothing wrong with doing New Years resolutions at all but I think it often promotes an all or nothing mindset. Which then turns things into good and bad categories. Which can turn things into guilt and shame because you missed the mark. I don’t know about you but I don’t need anymore guilt and shame?

Some of you know I’m a non-diet/body image wellness coach, if you didn’t now you🤣 Having struggled with an eating disorder for most of my life, the start of a new year always meant more restricting, lose weight, and exercise more. It’s never enough and if you reach your goal the mark moves again and again. Maybe you can relate. This year I’d like to offer up a different way to look at New Year’s resolutions….non diet resolutions…..especially for those who struggle with eating disorders, disordered eating, or who have been on the yo-yo diet train for many years.

God has great and mighty plans….specific plans for you and they don’t involve what you weigh or your pants size. Do we really think that you can only be used by God if you weigh a certain number?

You are more than a number on the scale or a size on your pants sweet friend.

Let’s look at some different ways you could go into the new year without diet culture screaming in your ear.

1. Practicing Self Care

That can look differently for everyone. This one is challenging for me and I’m still learning this one. But managing your everyday stress is vital. My physical therapist has been teaching me breathing exercises and it’s been very helpful.

Getting in the Word, prayer time and worship music are also vital.

Do something for yourself. You may only be able to carve out 10-15 mins a day to relax and care for yourself but do something that you enjoy.

Practicing joyful movement.

Setting boundaries and using the most underused word out there…..NO. Saying NO is not bad and NO is a complete sentence. You are not a bad person if you say NO. You have to learn your own capacity for your life. That is a form of self care. Being a good student of your body. More on the word NO later.

2. Stop Comparing

I could stay here FOREVER simply because this is something I’ve done for soooo many years. I just want you to know YOU are beautiful. YOU are unique and YOU are NOT meant to be someone else. Here’s the thing while I love Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, you are only seeing someone’s highlights. You don’t see that they took 20 pictures to post that perfect one, not to mention it’s filtered. We look at their life and think everything is all perfect when in reality it’s not. Get comfortable with who you are and where you’re at. Easier said than done I know. But God created you and doesn’t want a clone of you my friend. You have unique gifts and talents that ONLY YOU HAVE.

3. Cultivate A Grateful Heart

Take a few minutes every day and just be thankful for what you have. You may not have everything you want but looking for things to be thankful for can totally change your perspective. Start small if you have too. “Today I’m thankful for hot water.” There are people all over the world that don’t have hot water and even clean water at all.

It’s all about our Perspective.

4. The Should’s and Shouldn’t

Are you familiar with the Should’s and Shouldn’t? Ohhhh man, I sure am. Condemnation has hung around for far too long for me. I can “should” myself to death.

I should.

I must.

I shouldn’t.

I must be perfect.

Perform perfectly.

I have been here for far too long. Instead use words like;

‘I may’

‘I get too’

‘I can’

And ‘it’s ok.’

These words bring freedom instead of legalism and condemnation.

“I’m free to eat this piece of cake.”

This category of food isn’t all bad, I can eat all food.”

“I can live a balanced life.”

“It’s OK if I feel this way.”

This brings freedom my friend!! It has taken me a long time to get to this place and I’m not “perfect” at it but I’m so thankful to be on a road to recovery and for God leading me and growing more every day.

5. Setting Healthy Boundaries

This one is tough right? Why you ask? Because it’s hard to say “NO” for most of us, we don’t want to disappoint people or let them down. So that makes it easy to get caught up in people pleasing. We say yes to things we really don’t want to do and then resent people and start harboring unforgiveness and we get caught in a vicious cycle. I’m waaaaaaay to familiar with this one. Our emotions get wrapped up into people pleasing and it easily relates back to food and can cause you harm.

People pleasing has been my middle name, praise God I’ve gotten better! Be true to yourself my friend. Yes, helping others is good but not to the determent of your health AND the growth of the other person. Often times we hinder others the benefit and pain of growing.

Learn NO! It’s a beautiful word and something great to work on this year.

“Boundaries define us. They define what is me and what is not me. A boundary shows me where i end and someone else begins, leading me to a sense of ownership. Knowing what I am to own and take responsibility for gives me freedom. Taking responsibility for my life opens up many different options. Boundaries help us keep the good in and the bad out. Setting boundaries inevitably involves taking responsibility for your choices. You are the one who makes them. You are the one who must live with their consequences. And you are the one who may be keeping yourself from making the choices you could be happy with. We must own our own thoughts and clarify distorted thinking.” Henry Cloud

6. Negative Self Talk

Mmmm, this one right here!! I am my own worst critic. Can you relate? This is one I’ve had to work at sooooo much. Well, all of them, lol. I still battle with this sometimes. Uggghhh….Stinkin thinkin!

Renewing your mind is CRUCIAL! Speaking LIFE! Getting in agreement with what God’s word says about you instead of what that negative committee is saying about you and your situation.

Change your focus. Set your mind on things above and keep it set….Col 3:2

This will be hard work but thoughts will come and go but His word gives us instructions on what to do when those negative thoughts come….and they will I promise. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Stay on your guard my friend. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

While I was in coaching session, I learned about the Philippians 4:8 filter and I do this allllll the time now. Run your thoughts and fears through this filter:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8

In closing, I hope I have made you think beyond the typical weight loss goal of a New Years resolutions. My prayer for you is that you will have a good relationship with Lord first and foremost and then yourself. You can’t get away from yourself lol. You are with you every where you go.

Being able to get off that Yo-Yo diet train is hard work for sure but worth it. Having a healthy relationship with food and yourself is so important. Loving yourself, embracing who you are, flaws and all is freeing. I’m not totally there yet but praise God I’m not where I use to be!

What a year 2023 has been in my ED recovery and my life personally. I’m SOOOO beyond thankful and truly blown away by Gods love for me and my family. I have seen His hand like never before. Regardless, if certain things don’t change or get better God is always faithful and He’s never ever let me go, or left me. And guess what…..He won’t leave you either sweet friend.

2023 I WELCOME YOU! I look forward to seeing what God will do and how He will use me and how I will grow and change more.

GO GOD!! Do it!! You are gonna do AMAZING THINGS THIS YEAR I KNOW IT!! It’s the year of MIRACLES!

Let The Feasting Begin

So excited!! 🦃 It’s almost Thanksgiving! ANNNDDD, we have a new grandson on the way in just a few days! I can hardly contain myself. We had our first grand baby in May, his name is Luke and I’m obsessed lol. 2 new grands in 7 months time!! Y’all! This Lolly’s heart is full💙💙

Gosh, and Christmas will be here before you know it, right? I’ll be honest I’m definitely a Christmas girl! I love ALL THINGS CHRISTMAS! 🎄🌟🎅 The sights, the sounds, the smells, family and friends coming together for the holidays AND the food😋 Yes, the food is so yummy 😋 However… Duh…duh…duhhhh….the food for a lot of us can become such an issue of shame, guilt, and pain. Turkey, ham, gravy, pumpkin pie, green bean casserole, mac n’ cheese, cornbread dressing, sweet potato casserole….Oh, so yummy and honestly I can’t wait! But I remember a time when I didn’t feel that way. These 2 holidays would cause me a lot of anxiety over food. Most of us have already pre-attached shame and guilt before we even get to the holiday meal. That’s sad to me and I remember it all too well. Having an eating disorder or disordered eating wrecks havoc during times like this. Will I binge or restrict? How much will I gain or lose? What does so and so think of me? How can I best protect my image?

Diet culture tells us to eat a certain way, don’t eat this or that. If you do eat it, now you’re bad, now you take on all the shame and guilt and tell yourself I’ll do better next time. Always next time! Am I right???? During these 2 holidays you will hear ‘Happy Thanksgiving, don’t eat to much!’ Or if you Google Thanksgiving you’ll find 10 Tips to not gain weight during the holiday. Or Avoiding Holiday Weight gain. Or How to Make Your Holiday Healthy. Whyyyy? Why does everything go to weight or our image? Why is it always protecting body size? This says so much about our culture today.

Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

Let me speak a little Truth 💣 💣💣💣 over you sweet friend! You are made in the image of God. That’s means you are not an image that needs to be managed and manipulated and contoured into something the world says it’s approved of.

YOU ARE ALREADY APPROVED OF beautiful one!

One meal, including leftover won’t completely derail you or destroy all your progress you’ve made but all the worry, stress, and anxiety surrounding it sure will. To much cortisol in your system is worse than the meal you’re about to eat. For some, food equals anxiety and then we slap labels on food like “good food” and “bad food,” that causes more anxiety than the one meal you could enjoy with family and friends.

When you are in a chronic state of anxiety over food and body image and yes soooo many people are, it will absolutely affect your body. You may feel bad and have some symptoms from elevated cortisol levels. Some symptoms might include

• Fatigue

• Irritability

• Headaches

• Intestinal problems, such as constipation, bloating or diarrhea

• Anxiety or depression

• Weight gain

• Increased blood pressure

• Difficulty recovering from exercise

• Poor sleep

• Muscle pain or tension in the head, neck, jaw, or back

In all likelihood, once this happens you’re like “See, I told you I just can’t eat that particular food. When it could very well just be the stress of cortisol on your body and not necessarily the food you ate. We stress so much over food and image and don’t realize the impact it takes on our body and mind.

I read this the other day and thought how true that is. “Rest assured, the fear-mongering around calories and holiday meals says more about our culture than it does about our bodies. In reality, our bodies are smart; they are meant to be resilient. So go ahead: savor every last bite of that turkey or pumpkin pie, totally guilt-free.” The Every Girl blog.

Feasting is all over the Bible. So why do we not want to feast? We will fast all day long. But feasting is scary for most of us.

Feasting Verses:

And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we [must hold] a feast unto the LORD. Exodus 10:9

And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. Exodus 12:14

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month [shall be] the feast of tabernacles [for] seven days unto the LORD. Leviticus 23:3

And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink. Genesis 26:30

I could go on and on but I won’t. You can take a dive for yourself. Feasting is part of God’s best for you, we just don’t think that includes all the yummy foods He gave us.

Feasting was Gods idea. He invites us to feast and it’s part of Gods best for us. Just let that sink in for a bit. Ponder it my friend. This is just one of the ways He shows us his goodness and abundance.

He’s the God of Abundance!

God lavished his love on us and pours out his blessings over us. His blessings include food sweet friend. So I say this year, turn your heart toward gratitude and this year while you’re feasting at the table with family and friends, eat with a heart of gratitude.it will change everything!

I’d like to challenge you to a new way of thinking….Feasting is ok and food was meant to be ENJOYED AND SATISFYING. Tell the food police “Byyyeee!” Don’t say to yourself or the person beside you ‘ You’ve ate enough’ or ‘You’re getting MORE FOOD???’ Or ‘Don’t eat too much’ This causes more shame and guilt to people around you.

Let go of guilt and shame of eating a beautiful meal with family and friends.

Enjoy the moment.

Come to the table with grateful heart. Take in His goodness and love.

Do you want to break free?

Speaking from the bondage of a past eating disorder, feeling safe is what you want. Feeling loved and accepted is what you long for. Oddly when I was in bondage for all those years, I thought I was keeping myself safe with the rules and walls I had erected around food, exercise, and body image.

What I learned though, was that was not safety I felt, it was comfort in my bondage. I was so use to the feeling the comfort of my bondage, the very thought of being free prettified me. To be free meant I’d have to do something different, and it would be super scary and uncomfortable! I felt stuck in a cycle I didn’t know how to get out of. What I felt was FEAR! Fear of staying the same. Fear of changing. Fear of not being loved and accepted. If people knew me they’d think I’m a fraud, and they would hate me. This sweet friend is not of God. He did not give you a spirit of fear. God loves you and intends for YOU to live in FREEDOM, but that’s your choice. You get to choose to stay in bondage to fear, pride, food, exercise, drugs, alcohol, shopping, sex…..whatever your vice is. You get to choose. For me it is was an eating disorder and body image issues, people pleasing, past traumas, and no boundaries. Maybe you can relate?

When we are rooted in fear and being perfect, it’s exhausting. You have to uphold the image. When you have food rules, good foods, bad foods, exercise everyday to the point of hurting yourself and STILL fall short. It simply keeps the cycle going. You keep doing all the things hoping to one day meet the goal. What you don’t realize is the bar keeps getting placed higher and higher. Maybe one day you do, and you find out you’re still not enough. You still fall short.

What is wrong with me, you ask? You are human.

For someone with an eating disorder or disordered eating if you eat something on the the bad list, do you now think you are bad? Do you feel shame and guilt?

Friend, you were never meant to carry shame or guilt.

When you eat foods on the good list, do you now think you are good? And do you think others are bad because of the choices they make?

I can answer, yessss, I have thought that.

If you miss a workout, what does that do to you? Do you feel shame and guilt? Are you bad now?

Ohhh friend, I know shame and guilt all too well. Maybe you do too. But you can be free from the shame and guilt that tries to consume you. Run to THE ONE who can heal you and set you free!!

Now on the other side and walking in freedom from an eating disorder, I still realized I was dealing with some pride issues. Me? HAAA! Not me Lord 🤣🙈🤷🏼‍♀️ A particular person in my life, has a history of not making good choices. That infuriates me quite honestly. I could get into some pride thinking I know better than they do. And, maybe I do😜 If they would just eat this certain way, they would be better, healthier. If they would go to the dr and actually do what the dr says, they would be better and healthier. I “KNOW” how to treat my body…..says the one who WAS stuck in an eating disorder most of her life, lol. Do what I do, you’ll be better. PRIDE! Eat this and don’t eat that, and you’ll be better. PRIDE! Exercise like this and you’ll be better. PRIDE! Friend, yep that’s pride talking. I’ll preach to myself if you don’t need it. We think we know what’s best for others but in truth, do we even know or do what’s best for ourselves?

Are we walking in freedom or in bondage still wrapped up in a bow on a pretty package? Still rooted in fear. Still enslaved to our own devices?

Pride has no place in us.

Truth is, I don’t know what’s best for someone else, oh but I know THE ONE who does. My Jesus does. I can do my best to be an example to others but what they do is between them and God. Not for me to judge. I don’t know what’s in their heart. I can speculate, and yea I could be right but it’s still for them and God. They have their own story to walk out just like I have mine to walk out.

You work on you. You let God work in you so you can be the best version of YOU! You were created for a purpose and God has great plans for you. Plans to do good and not harm. Plans for freedom and healing! Only you can do the hard work and get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Yepppp! I said “get comfortable” with being uncomfortable. We never grow and change staying the same, doing the same things over and over again. No, we have to do different, and it may feel uncomfortable but friend it doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It’s just uncomfortable and it’s OK!

Walk it out baby! You and God got this!!

Weight loss doesn’t equal Healthy

Having an eating disorder or disordered eating is all consuming. It’s so insidious. Diet culture puts all these images in your head of how you are supposed to be, weigh, and look. Always comparing, always judging myself, and never measuring up. One of the best things I did was clean up my social media. Even though I’m free of the eating disorder things can still trigger thoughts and behaviors so I am very vigilant and protective of my environment and my circle. Recent example of how quickly those thoughts can rush in and how we have to take every thought captive right when it happens. We took a family group photo, the angle of it was terrible. I already knew I wasn’t going to like it but it’s a memory so I did it. I have been sick a lot lately and had a good bit of steroids 😭 well we all know it makes your face round and puffy. I hate them but a necessary evil sometimes. When I saw the picture I immediately was like how awful it was and Oh My Gosh it made me look so fat and ugly. Yep, that was my thoughts. Not what a precious memory. Then I start going down the list of what I need to do to be “thinner” and more accepted, oh don’t forget how I was comparing myself. Literally, this is all in seconds of seeing the picture and for a few mins I was back in “old Nicole” I don’t ever want to be back in the darkness like that. So I pull out my arsenal and start talking to myself . I like to use Philippians 4:8 filter, let me explain. I take the verse and compare it to whatever I’m thinking and if it doesn’t line up to God’s Word then it has to go.

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

The thoughts I was thinking about myself were they honorable, pure, lovely, and so on. Well, no absolutely NOT. I was saying awful things about myself. So I was able to reel myself back in pretty quickly. But it’s hard work to do it, but oh friend it’s so worth it. You are not more loved or valuable because you lost weight, live in a thin body, or look a certain way. You are LOVED AND VALUABLE JUST THE WAY YOU ARE. That’s the honest truth but sometimes we don’t want to believe God will love us where we are at.

His love for you is everlasting and unconditional.

Recently, I was around a conversation about a loved one and this is how it went. Someone says to this person “WOW!!! You look great so and so, you’ve lost weight!” Well, of course the person says yea I have, thank you for noticing. But let me say WEIGHT LOSS DOESN’T EQUAL HEALTHY. This person isn’t healthy at all. They are stuck in unhealthy issues, they are not taking care of themselves at all, skips meals, and don’t take their medications…..oh but they’ve lost weight (hope you can hear the sarcasm) 😒😳 and people make comments that help that person stay stuck in unhealthy patterns when they have no clue.

I don’t know why we think it’s ok to comment on peoples body size and weight loss. I use to do it too. You have no idea what that person is going through. I can say this because I have struggled with an eating disorder myself and getting comments on weight loss and appearance drove me deeper. I wanted to be perfect but the only perfect person is JESUS.

I know someone who got Covid and it seriously affected them with taste and smell. They could hardly eat anything, this went on like year’ish. This person I would say was already thin but when this happened they lost weight. They were telling me how others commented on “Wow, you’ve lost weight, you look great!” Again, with the commenting on someone’s body size. This person lost weight because of a health condition and couldn’t eat. They weren’t trying to lose weight but they couldn’t help it. They simply couldn’t eat.

Another friend had cancer, not known to everyone but because of chemo they lost weight and people commented how great she looked not having any idea what she was going through. They weren’t trying to lose weight but others commenting about weight loss was so hurtful to her.

Maybe you’ve never thought about this but truly you have no idea what people are going through behind closed doors. We can dress it up, filter it, and act as if everything is fine when we are broken on the inside.

Maybe you are the one who wears the mask, filters you life, photos, and acts as if everything is fine but sweet friend I see you and your brokenness and YOU are loved and valuable just the way you are. Allow Jesus into the broken places and find your people. You can be Broken and beautiful despite what the world says.

Whatever you are going through God has you in the palm of His hand and He longs to set you free. You have been through things that can help someone else. Share your story.

SUGAR…..Is it addicting?

The answer might surprise you.

Man, I know sugar is a controversial topic. I also know some of you may not share my same views and that’s OK too. I love and value you just the same💗 Don’t come at me with daggers and hate mail. I can already hear “Sugar is so bad for you. It’s causes inflammation in your body.” You know what else causes inflammation in your body???

Stress!

Stress over what to eat or not eat.

Stress over good foods, bad food’s categories.

Stress over hating yourself or your body.

Stress for over exercising, and punishing your body.

Stress over finances, relationships, and simply life in general.

Stress puts us in fight or flight mode. We are not meant to stay there just get through the stressful situation. But when we live in a constant state of anxiety over food and body image issues we do more damage than a 🍩 or a 🍪 We experience physical and emotional effects of stress, shame and guilt, it can be severe or debilitating. It can manifest as migraines, IBS, chronic disease, food allergies, insomnia, anxiety, and many other things.

I only share from my own lived life experience…..no condemnation….no judgement. But if you’d like to get off the diet roller coaster, I’d like to invite you to a different way to see things if you’re open to it.

We all have our own food journey and have to figure things out on our own. Many of you know the journey I’ve been on recovering from an eating disorder. I’m not ashamed of that one single bit. It’s such a huge part of me, my story, and who I am today. In fact, because of it I believe I’m a better person and I have much more compassion for others struggling with the same issue.

I use to think sugar was addictive, even taught it in health and wellness classes. But as I continue on my journey I see things very differently today. I have been practicing Intuitive Eating, which has been so freeing to me.

I hope you will hear my heart on this.

Again, this is my experience and many others I know. As I allowed myself “permission” to eat whatever I wanted, the desire to eat all things sweet over time has diminished. I was desperate and determined to break the chains that have bound me and the diet culture rules about food and body image. Maybe you find yourself here today? You are in good company and the right place sweet friend.

So what is diet culture you ask? Yea, I know it makes me scratch my head too, lol😂🙈

Diet culture” refers to a set of beliefs that values thinness, appearance, and shape above health & well-being. Additionally, the concept places importance on restricting calories, normalizes negative self-talk, and labels certain foods as “good” and “bad”.

Do you think God envisioned us living like this? Critiquing and criticizing the very image He created??? Do you think God says you have to be thinner or prettier for Me to love you??? Ummm, a big resounding NOOOO! Absolutely NOT! Sweet one, God loves you just the way you are. Whether your big or small, fat or thin, underweight or overweight…..that makes NO difference to God.

He loves YOU UNCONDITIONALLY!

My new life with intuitive eating told me there are NO good foods or bad foods….JUST FOOD. No rules or restricting.

Yes! Intuitive eating can be VERY SCARY thing to do but I knew if I wanted complete freedom then I would have to do it. I had tried everything else. The cravings at times would be so overwhelming and then at other times I would restrict and not give in. Maybe you can relate?

Let’s be honest sugar is yummy and it makes food taste goooood, right? Just like salt does. Fresh, soft, warm brownies or gooey chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven, Ohhh, makes your mouth water, it’s just heaven😋 Also….tempting to overeat or binge on them right? Maybe sweets aren’t your thing, maybe you are a salty snack kinda person. Whatever is tempting to you just think about that.

Does it have power over you?

Can you eat just one?

Or do you feel like you have to just eat it all?

I’ve been there, I know this feeling well. I felt like if I ate 1 I’d eat them all.

I felt like I have no self control. Have you ever felt that way? That’s such a helpless feeling, isn’t it? Then it takes us down a rabbit trail of what is wrong with me? Why do I keep doing that? I’m such a failure.

YOU are not a failure!!!

The Word tells us:

I will walk about in freedom,
for I have sought out your precepts.
Psalm 119:45

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

If you are in Christ…..YOU are free indeed!

As I sloooowly gave myself permission to eat whatever I wanted, the desire to eat allllll the things has diminished. No, it didn’t happen overnight. I’ve been on this intuitive eating journey since October of 2019. Yep, that’s a long time and A LOT OF REALLY, REALLY, REALLY HARD WORK. Its a mind shift for sure. It’s the “permission” to eat whatever it is that’s been the forbidden food, the good foods, or bad foods that brings about freedom. I know it sounds crazy but it’s true. When we are on a diet we tell ourselves we can’t have this or that but friend that makes that craving intensify like ONE MILLION % Eventually, you break down and eat it and now you have binged or ate it all. Now you have feelings of guilt and shame. Now you have to punish yourself more at your next workout. I know someone can relate to this….you’re out there lol. You’ve done it. I’ve done it! You feel bad about yourself again. I’m such a loser. Can’t control myself. Why do I do this? What’s wrong with me?

Friend, please hear me there is absolutely NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU. You are human and we all do it. I use to love love love Reece’s peanut buttercups, but in my opinion they were a “bad food” so it intensified the craving and I would have to eat it. There is a Reeces cup on my nightstand since Christmas that I have absolutely NO desire to eat. I leave it there to remind myself of where I was. I have found I don’t eat even like them anymore. But they were forbidden and that made me crave it more. How crazy is that? Does that makes sense? Also, as I allowed myself a large iced coffee the longer I exposed myself to it the less I wanted it and didn’t finish the large. A medium was satisfying. I have practiced this with all foods now. I can eat whatever I want, no fear, no shame, or guilt.

Ask yourself what sounds good to you? No matter if you’ve put in it good food or bad food category. Food is just food. Food is meant to nourish, yes, but it’s also meant to satisfy and makes us happy. Nothing wrong with eating a satisfying meal or dessert, you don’t have to punish yourself. You will cause less stress in your life, in your body if you begin practicing this. This is just a start. I’d love to help you on this journey to finding food freedom and peace with body image.

Intuitive eating to me is like truly walking with Holy Spirit and listening and honoring my body. The body God gave me. He made our bodies to communicate its needs to us. When my stomach growls, I pause and ask myself if I’m really hungry or bored, then I listen to it, and I feed it. I don’t shove it down and say “No, you don’t need anything.” Every meal, every snack I ask myself what I want, and that’s what I eat. It’s more than that though, I also pay close attention to how it made me feel. Diet culture has told us not to listen to our body’s cues, but to subdue it. Beat it into submission. Friend, God made you in His image and He made our body to function right it’s us that have lost touch with our cues, our body, and sometimes God himself.

New year, New me…NOPE!

Hey y’all! Hope you are doing well. At the new year, we are bombarded by all the messages New Year, New You! It’s time to get in shape, lose weight, exercise more. Perfect the outside of you. But the Word says, “….For the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

It’s so tempting to fall into this. But what if you started this year just as you are…..In Christ?

Be thankful that God made you or be in awe of all the things He’s done for you.

What if we chose to be grateful for where God has placed us? Instead of always striving to be somewhere different.

Sweet friend, YOU were purchased by the blood of Jesus, and He can turn your darkness into light.

See His mercies are new every day…..every single day, not just the first of the year.

Instead of working on changing our outward appearance let’s work on coming in alignment with what God says you are. It’s the principle of agreement.

Speaking God’s promises becomes SOOO powerful when we also function in His law of agreement. It’s God’s plan!

When you come into agreement with what God has for your life you are saying saying YES & AMEN!

So this year, I am not trying to become a new person, I’m trying to come in agreement with what God has for my life.

If I’m trying to live better and healthier that means I’m trying to come in to alignment with what God says about me…..And He says my body is good today!

Your body is good friend!

New Year, New Me….NOPE! I just want to grow into more of what God has made me to be, NOT a new person. If you are IN CHRIST, you’ve already been made new…..walk in that!

The Lies We Believe

If you are struggling with body image issues, sweet friend you are believing lies. Please hear me when I say God designed you beautifully and perfect just the way you are. He didn’t create us to hate ourselves. I’ve been there, I know what it’s like. No amount of weight loss will make you happy. At my smallest I hated myself more than you could know. I was stuck in an eating disorder, past trauma, and shame and guilt. I was believing the lies the enemy was whispering to me. I bought it hook, line, and sinker, maybe you have too?

The enemy wants to steal, kill, and destroy us. He wants to steal your joy and peace and often uses our insecurities to do it.

Sometimes the lies we believe are loud and other times they are very subtle. But they can become so deeply rooted in us and we not even realize it.

Society/diet culture has sold us the BIGGEST lie…..If we look a certain way or weigh a certain amount you will be happy and your life will be better. That’s a lie straight from the pit of hell.

Your happiness has nothing to do with your looks or weight sweet friend. Don’t buy into that. You are more than a number and more than how you look. You have sooo much more to offer than an image. God has given you gifts and talents that only you have. He has an awesome plan for you but if we are stuck believing the lies the enemy is speaking then we cannot fulfill our purpose.

Let’s kick the devil in his teeth by doing the work to overcome the lies he’s tried to distract us with.

👊TRUTH…..YOUR TRUTH is YOU are unique, wonderfully made, and there’s no one else like you.

👊He knew you before he created you, knew the mistakes you would make and STILL chose to create you ON PURPOSE..FOR A PURPOSE.

👊You are saved and completely made whole IN HIM.

👊You are forgiven and redeemed.

👊You are called and you are free!

👊You are victorious, accepted, and healed.

👊And so much more.

When the enemy comes at you telling you lies, “you are not enough” you come back at him with I AM MORE THAN ENOUGH because God calls me daughter of the King. I am here for a purpose with gifts and talents someone else needs. I WILL rise up from the ashes and be ALL that God has called me to be! Devil you are under my feet and defeated and I WON’T believe your lies anymore. Amen!! Speak truth and scripture over your life and walk in Gods plan for your life and family, in Jesus name, Amen!🙏🙌

My Health & Wellness Journey/Breaking Free From Diet Culture

🚨As we start the new I have exciting news!🚨
I FINALLY finished my Health and Wellness Certification in December. God has done some amazing things on this journey of mine. I have always been interested in health and wellness and helping others. I taught Health and Wellness for a while as well but wow does it look different today. My niche is completely different than other Health and Wellness Coaches it’s one of food freedom and peace with your body. How does that sound?😍🙌

I’m so thankful I didn’t finish in 2020. Back then I had so many food rules, restricting, over exercising, under exercising, abusing laxatives and diuretics (stopped that 5-6 years ago) and trying to fit into the mold the world has set.

Thin is best!

You will be accepted if you take up less space.

The message we hear; If you look a certain way they will love you; If your jeans are a single digit you are golden! If you’re a certain skin color or have certain hair, eyes, etc. THIS is called toxic beauty standards set by the world.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Diet culture!

“The diet industry is worth billions (64.7 Billion to be exact) –– and it profits directly off our insecurity around our bodies and our health. This pervasive industry takes over our culture, minds, and wallets and preys even more specifically on women from young ages.”

What’s is the cost of toxic beauty you might be asking? Well, it affects young kids and women…men as well but more so women and girls.

What does it look like? Anxiety, eating disorders, disordered eating, self esteem issues, depression, self harm, PTSD, suicide, fat phobia, orthorexia, diabetes, metabolic disorders, drug abuse, I could go on and on. The list is endless.

THIS!! Breaks my heart!

Most of my life I’ve bought into this.

I wanted to be free!

Free to eat and not feel guilt and shame.

Free to actually enjoy eating and feel satisfied.

To move and exercise with joy, and not move to compete or focus on losing weight to fit in a certain body.

I hope something I say resonates with you.

I can get on a rant because I’m so passionate about it. I started back to school last year, despite hearing the voices of ‘your not good enough’ and “You have nothing to offer’ or God can’t use you, you’re too broken.

Do you ever hear these voices?

My biggest takeaway from 2020 till now is God has a plan whether we see it or not. He created YOU for great things. His plans for you are to prosper and not harm you. It may be a fight but sweet friend it’s worth it. Despite how I felt about giving up school in 2020 God knew what I didn’t know. He had more to teach me and more freedom to be had.

Let me just say here….HOW HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL YOU ARE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SIZE OF YOUR BODY. Big or small, white, black, or brown God wants to use you just the way you are. However, how you feel about your body will impact your relationship with God, your relationship with others, your identity, and your calling.

I’ve learned there are no good or bad foods, and my body isn’t a project to improve and constantly be rejecting and trying to make it fit into what the world deems good! My body IS GOOD regardless of what the world says.

YOUR BODY IS GOOD.
YOUR BODY IS GOOD TODAY! JUST AS YOU ARE SWEET FRIEND!!

Food freedom and peace with your body IS possible and I’d love to help you on your journey. As the new year starts you will be bombarded by diet culture and ideas of starting another new diet. More exercise, detoxing, clean eating and the worlds view of how you should look to be accepted. You are loved and accepted just as you are!

I use a biblical approach to food freedom and body image issues. Learning to eat intuitively and trust your body once again. To eat and feel satisfied and not deprived and become comfortable with your body. Is it easy, no! But soooo worth it!

We want to walk in freedom in so many areas including food and body but yet as a society we’ve created so many rules and restrictions in food, exercise, and body. We become convinced that smaller is better but God created us all and, guess what? We are all different….different colors, sizes and shapes. We keep striving to look a certain way, weigh a certain number but having to restrict food or complete food groups, to exercise to extreme in order to stay or obtain a certain size. Does that sound like freedom when we become obsessed with food, weight, and body? I use to think so but after several years of really hard work I think differently now.

We say we want to be led by Holy Spirit but we’ve completely lost all since of our hunger cues or body cues. We’re taught DON’T LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, your body doesn’t know what you need. But God created your body whatever size it is to be incredibly remarkable! If we truly listen to our body, the cues it gives instead of ignoring them and allow God to work in you, you can learn a different way. You’ll soon see how amazing your body truly is. God is so good and amazing and so is your body!
