ARE YOU LIVING TO EAT OR EATING TO LIVE?

EAT TO LIVE 2

First off I believe we need to change our view of food. Food can definitely be an addiction and hard to overcome especially when we look to the world for an image that says I’m acceptable. You were created in the image if God and  He has made us all different and your version of healthy may look different than someone else’s. Our bodies are different and we need to embrace that. Your size 6, 8, 10, 14, or whatever it is WILL BE DIFFERENT than someone else because of our body size and shape. All that God wants is for “YOU TO BE YOU” and for you to embrace where you’re at as He takes you on your journey of health and restoration. If you are not your best YOU, you cannot fulfill your purpose and your purpose is NOT TO BE SOMEONE ELSE OR LOOK LIKE THEM! Being healthy as we’ve talked about isn’t just losing weight its abt feeling healthy, strong, and looking YOUR best.

We need to have the mindset of “eating to live” and NOT “living to eat” Food is meant to nourish and heal our bodies but when we are “living to eat” we can be out of control and we are basically eating and drinking whatever we want without thinking about the consequence of what the impact might be. For instance, eating too much sugar or drinking too much soda, what does it do to your body and immune system? I love sugar and sodas just like the next person but it’s so bad for our bodies. It’s extremely addictive, even to the point where its compared to a cocaine addiction. Our bodies get a rush, a fix if you will when we consume it, leaving us wanting more and more. So what exactly does sugar do? Well the obvious, it packs on the pounds making us gain weight. It also makes you more hungry. For example when you’re hungry you decide to eat a doughnut, chips, cookies instead of something nutritious, well your body is still screaming at you saying “Hey I need something nutritious to keep going, You feed me junk!” It’s still craving the vitamins and nutrition that it needs, but you’ve fed it empty calories, and it’s not satisfied and now you need MORE! Sugar also suppresses your immune system, it also upsets the mineral activity in your body. Example to much sugar depletes your magnesium level which can cause you to not sleep well, cause muscle cramps, etc. Sugar also causes anxiety, hyperactivity, difficulty concentrating, as well as causes us to be irritable. And the list goes on and on and on.

1 CORINTHIANS 10:23 NIV says “Everything is permissible–but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible–but not everything is constructive.”

We are all permitted to eat what we want, Jesus’s death on the cross released us from the old law. But does that mean EVERYTHING is beneficial? Or profitable? Of course not! We need wisdom and guidance, and to pay attention to our bodies. Our bodies are the temple so we need to honor it and take of it.

body is the temple

I believe we have to go through a retraining process for our minds and hearts. And before you ask……YES ITS PAINFULL! But in His word we are called to crucify our flesh so we won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh. It is hard but wouldn’t you rather have the pain of CHANGING into something good or the pain of STAYING THE SAME, going around the SAME stupid mountain over and over again! It’s pain either way. Wouldn’t you rather press through to the other side to a life of VICTORY? It’s important as we walk this new journey, this new lifestyle that we are gentle with ourselves especially when we make mistakes. This is a process, NOT something that just happens overnight. Be patient and take it one day at time.

change or staying the same

One thing that helps is the acronym H.A.L.T. So ask yourself “Am I Hungry? Am I Angry? Am I Lonely? Am I Tired? All 4 of these are physical and emotional conditions and we MUST keep them in check. I think it’s about getting to know ourselves and our bodies on a deeper level and then letting God work through that and bring healing to our body, hearts, and minds. So asking ourselves these questions and one more “Is this going to be beneficial to my body or hurt it?” It really brings a different perspective and opens up our hearts and mind to think about what we’re doing and if it will benefit us or hurt us. So the last and final question we should ask ourselves is “Are we living to eat or eating to live?”
